Eating Plastic

Project type

Mixed Media

Date

October 2023

Location

Installation at USC Environmental Studies Office

Initially contacted to create a painting for the grand opening of USC's new Sustainability Hub, this piece ended up being bought by the Environmental Studies Office and hangs in their recently renovated lobby.

-Artist Statement-

The Laysan Albatross is one of the largest sea birds in the world, migrating between the coast of California and the coast of Japan. Pairs mate for life and while searching for fish and squid to feed their young, they mistake plastic for food. It is estimated 90% of these birds have plastic in their stomachs often leading to starvation. This mixed media piece uses acrylic paint and found trash to evoke empathy towards the animals we share this earth with as well as acknowledge one of the many damaging effects plastic has on our global ecosystem.

On top of acrylic paint the materials include; foam packaging, trash bags, straws, hummus lids, an orange bucket, soda cup lid, and ziplock bags
