Eco Pack
In working with a former creative director at Nike, this project culminated over 3 years into a line of backpack prototypes and direct experience with developing a brand. The Eco Pack strips down a backpack to the essentials basing decisions on a form follows function framework.
Designed to economize the manufacturing process and design of backpacks as a simple carrying device by excluding zippers and eliminating unnecessary pockets. The pack also embodies sustainability through the ability to incorporate recycled tarpaulin or nylon as the primary body material.
Lastly, the final iteration of the eco pack also includes a collapsable trail chair to innovate on the ways a backpack can carry and encourage being outside.
Overall the process required me to communicate design ideas with a manufacturer through sketches and repeated iterations on pack details. Although it never reached production, the experience taught me the importance of identifying a problem through customer research, clear visual communication with physical and digital sketches, and how to capture an intentional feeling for the customer using a wide range of aesthetic strategies.
